When i first read that headline, I thought to myself - there's no way that google has been in business for 25 years. Yes, they have. They've been in business for 28, actually. So this is a huge announcement.

Here's what's happening in a nutshell. You can find the links to the real announcement and some tips on how to adjust accordingly from people who live in SEO/GEO/whatever acronym applies now, below my TL;DR synopsis.

Synopsis: Google announced significant changes to search at their development conference last week. It's the biggest update in over 25 years, by their own description. Here are a few things that stood out to me in their announcement:

  • Search results are now personalized based on users' Gmail and personal data

  • Background agents now monitor the web for topics of interest on users' behalf without a prompt

  • AI Mode hit 1 billion users, queries doubling quarterly

For a neighborhood restaurant, a boutique, or a service business that relies on people finding you online, this shift is worth understanding. If Google's AI answers a question about "best brunch in Woodstock" without linking to your website, you don't get the visit. Getting cited is the new version of ranking on page one -- and the rules for how to get there are different than they used to be.

This means GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is now even more important. Businesses need to optimize their content so the AI tools learn to cite and recommend them. I've been going down a rabbit hole on it and wanted to share a few resources that I've found useful:
